This town is uniquely round. Two walls, elliptical in shape, form a double fortification. Eguisheim's role was primarily economic rather than military, hosting numerous wealthy tithe courtyards which required protection.
Agricultural outbuildings were erected between the ancient walls, creating a second periphery, the Allmend. In the 16th century, following the end of the great conflicts, the external rampart was lowered to accommodate dwellings constructed against the wall.
